Houllier planning for long-term success

The Frenchman admits that he is unlikely to find a club willing to offer him the time and support he has received at Anfield. Houllier believes he can repay his supporters by making Liverpool England's, and one day Europe's, premier club.

Houllier said: The team is young and I like to work with the kind of support I've got here. If you look at the history of this club they don't sack managers. The people before me were here a long time.

"We've got a vision for this club and a target that is shared by the board and the shareholders and that vision goes beyond the next two years, so let's go for it.

"Whether it is with me or without me is another matter. If I had to leave tomorrow for one reason and another, then there is good capital here, a good young squad.

"If I got knocked down by a car people wouldn't be able to say I haven't left a good young team behind. It could happen - as a Frenchman in England I still look the wrong way first when I'm crossing the road!"

He added: "But I would like to be the one who takes the team forward. I've never felt as good as I have since the start of this year and the working relationship here is very good, so if I was offered a new contract of course I would sign it."
