Houllier ready for crucial period

Houllier's men have claimed only a paltry point from their opening two Premiership games and the Frenchman is fully aware of the pressure on both himself and his players ahead of crucial clashes with Spurs tomorrow night and Merseyside rivals Everton this Saturday.

Houllier said: "The two games we have played so far belong to the past. The two games we have ahead of us are very important for our season.

"We have one point on the board and that's a start for us. Obviously we'd prefer to have a few more points, but it's still early in the season and a lot of games to go. Newcastle started slowly last season but then finished really well so things can change.

"There have been positives so far. I was pleased with the character and the attitude of the players on Sunday. They wanted to get something from the game.

"We know Spurs will give us a game tomorrow because they are a good team. I would say they have improved this season and they'll be confident having got their first win at the weekend. It should be an exciting match."
