"I think we earned our replay," said the Liverpool boss after the game. "We knew it would be hard work here but we had some chances and we defended very well.

"The team worked very hard - they seemed to stick together when we needed to be resilient.

Houllier also praised Emile Heskey for his all-round performance and defensive duties which kept Liverpool in the game.

"I told him at half time that he was our best defender - that shows the experience of our players.

He was also full of praise for Trevor Francis' side, who showed tremendous spirit.

"Trevor's done a good job and his team are playing good football.

"In the last 10 minutes I couldn't wait for the end. Its just half time and we've got another 90 minutes to play.

"It was exciting - great passion, but I'm pleased because we had spells when we played some good stuff and spells when we had to stay strong and show mental stamina."
