Houllier set to miss out on Dugarry

Michel Benguigui insists that both the Reds and Spurs were interested in signing the Bordeaux star ahead of Midlands club Birmingham City. Benguigiu has revealed that his client has decided to stay with the Premiership new-comers.

Benguigui said: "Sure, there is interest from Liverpool. Yes, Spurs are interested. But is that surprising?" What you have to know about Christophe is that he is a world champion. He has won trophies. What is important to him is to be happy, to be in an environment he enjoys.

"To be frank, he is very close to Steve Bruce, to the chairman and the players. He gets on with his team-mates. He is aware of how much the supporters love him too. He appreciates that."

Most would expect that Liverpool's supposed interest was merely a fabrication on the agents part in a bid to get a better deal for his client. It is to be hoped that Gerard Houllier has set his sights rather higher for the summer ahead.
