Houllier: Shortage of cash prevented Ljungberg bid

Gerard Houllier has revealed that a shortage of money in 1998 prevented him from making a bid for Freddie Ljunberg - one of the Premiership's best players.

Instead Ljunberg ended-up at Arsenal and helped the Gunners complete the double last season.

"If we had the money back in 1998 then I would have signed him for Liverpool," said the boss.

"Freddie was offered to us when he was still playing for Amstad. I was interested but I wanted to use the money I had to reinforce the defence."

Surely money should have been made available to sign such a talented player?!
