Houllier: Strikers will deliver

With players of the calibre of Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Milan Baros it would be expected that the Reds would always carry a potent goal-threat . Owen and Heskey, though, have failed to find consistency throughout the season, while Milan Baros has yet to be given the regular chance his fleeting displays so deserve.

Houllier is concerned by the wasteful finishing of his forwards but expects his faith to be fully repaid.

He said: "We are creating chances. Look at the Crystal Palace game, I mean even Trevor Francis admitted we played them off the pitch. In many games this season at Anfield we have played some great football and not won.

"The Crystal Palace match should have been done and dusted by half time, the same against Basel at home in the Champions League. We have created good chances but the finishing hasn't been in proportion to the quality of our football.

"I have given a lot of encouragement and support to the players and I have great belief in the strikers we have. As Shankly used to say at least they are getting into the position to score.

"We do need to score in Auxerre as an away goal in a knock-out competition is always very important and I'm confident we will start converting the chances we create."
