Houllier taking Carling challenge seriously

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson and Arsenal supremo Arsene Wenger are expected to field under-strength sides when they begin the tournament this week, but Houllier has vowed to play strong sides throughout a competition he has claimed twice during his Anfield tenure.

Houllier said: "This competition may have been good for us but I would say the way we have approached it shows we have been good for the competition. have won it twice in three years and had to play strong teams along the way. When we won it in 2001 we had to overcome a full strength Chelsea side.

"Last season we beat Southampton and, of course, Manchester United in the final when no-one will argue against the fact they played their strongest team. People may devalue the tournament but we don't. We have experienced wonderful times in Cardiff and we want to do so again.

Houllier's bid to claim the league cup for a third time, is of course, fraught with danger. The Reds face a difficult trip to Blackburn Rovers just weeks after a tempestuous Premiership clash between the two sides that saw Jamie Carragher suffer a broken leg due to a reckless challenge from Rovers defender Lucas Neill.

"It's a very difficult draw for us because it's never easy when two Premiership teams are playing each other," admitted the Frenchman.

"Both teams have shared the competition over the last three seasons. I expect two strong teams again tomorrow. We will be taking the tournament as seriously as we have always done because we want to win every trophy we can."

Will we beat Blackburn... again?
