Chief Executive Rick Parry has spoken out in defence of his manager and Houllier is happy to have such support.

He said: "All the board go to the games. Rick Parry and our chairman attend a lot of our games and meetings.

"So they know what's going on. But even if we are 12 games without a win, then so what? All I know is that we have got the foundation here at the club.

"I don't see any winning team without failure at some stage. I was expecting this period and I told the board "Don't panic, it's normal."

"But at the same time I understand the pressure. All this media attention was not the case 20 years ago. It was not the case in Bill Shankly's era.

"It's gone crazy. Where it is difficult for a manager is to put things into perspective. We have to keep strong and keep together because we will get over it.

"I know we have the quality. We have a nucleus of players that will take this club to where we want to be."
