The 26-year-old Bootle-born player has added an attacking guile to his defensive solidity since returning from a broken leg last month and Houllier feels he could yet force his way into Eriksson's squad to travel to Portugal.

Houllier said: "I'm not one of those managers who wants to tell Sven-Goran Eriksson how to do his job.

"He will pick the players he feels are right for the occasion, but I don't see how they can do without Jamie in Portugal in the summer.

"It would be like having three players rolled into one if they take him. He has already proved beyond question that he can operate at full-back or centre-back or as a midfield anchor man and can fill all three roles with distinction.

"If Sven took him to Euro 2004, he could be sure that Jamie could answer the call in any one of those positions. He has already done it, so what more proof is needed? That is why can be so valuable for England.

"That versatility, as well as all his other qualities, would surely be priceless."
