Houllier: We can do better

The Reds boss believes that Liverpool have now reached a plateau after three years of steady progress. The setback, according to Houllier, is only a temporary one in the long road to success.

Houllier said: "We finished fifth and competed until the final game for a Champions League place and we beat Manchester United, who have proved their worth since then, in a cup final.

"I wouldn't say it was a disappointing season but we can improve and we can do better.

"We've had three good seasons, finishing fourth, third and then second, and won trophies along the way. This season is what happens sometimes when you are making progress. We reached a phase of plateau.

"Some players haven't been as good as in other years. We have had a tough season, with internationals some of our players have played 70 games. Chelsea have played only 48 matches and they looked fresher. It has been a long season.

"Some of our players also discovered the Premiership this season and I can tell you they will be better next season."
