Houllier: We want nine

"We will give it our best shot in the next three games because we know they represent nine points and the players know what is at stake at the moment," said the Liverpool boss ahead of Sunday's game at Southampton.

"It is a vital stage of the season. I may well rotate some players to bring some freshness because players need a break sometimes.

"We don't have the same strength or confidence at the back at the moment so when we score the first goal there seems to be some anxiety around.

"Southampton played very well when they won at Anfield and they scored in the first minute when we got caught from our corner. They don't concede a lot of goals.

"Last season Emile Heskey scored a vital goal and we managed to get a win. The good thing about most of the players here is they are not totally down when they have a bad performance and they are not totally euphoric when they have a very good performance.

"Come Sunday the Marseille match will be forgotten and our minds and energy will be on the Southampton game."
