The 23-year-old England international, who was linked with a world-record £50m move to Roman Abramovich's Chelsea during the summer, has publicly stated his desire to remain on Merseyside after talks over an improved deal began well this week.

With the future of another prized possession, Michael Owen, still far from clear, Gerard Houllier will be grateful that Liverpool-born Gerrard has commited himself to the club so emphatically.

Houllier said: "That is very good news as Stevie knows we want to keep him here as he is the heart of the team.

"Stevie has grown from an Academy player to become a Premiership player then an international player. He wants to stay here and I don't see any problem. We will sort his contract out very quickly. The sooner the better."
