Former Red Brad Friedel gave a man of the match performance against his old side as he made save after save to deny Liverpool at least a point and probably all three at Ewood Park yesterday afternoon. His performance earned him the praise of his manager.

"First of all I have to say this was a huge win for us and Brad was magnificent," said Hughes.

"Liverpool had a few opportunities and we needed him at times and he was a huge presence for us and was an inspiration to everyone. Brad had a knock on his ankle as well and played through the pain barrier.

"I thought everyone was magnificent for us from Brad to Tugay and Benni McCarthy who got the goal, everybody. It was difficult going into this game on the back of a 6-2 defeat at Arsenal but we showed great qualities."
