The 30-year-old Finn, whose towering header secured an impressive 4-2 win at Levski Sofia on Wednesday, is eager to repeat the dramatic 5-4 win over Spanish side Alaves back in the trophy-laden year of 2001.

Hyypia said: "I have fond memories of our victory in the 2001 final in Dortmund. It is right up there with the greatest moments of my career, just behind beating Arsenal in the FA Cup final.

"I believe we are strong enough to go all the way again. We are a stronger team than we have shown this season. The mood has always been good in the squad, despite what has been happening all around us these past few months.

"We are intent on doing all we can to end the season right and reach our targets. The way this season has gone, nobody can be happy. We are good enough to be competing in the Champions League and certainly to be qualifying for it. A UEFA Cup success can change the course of our season."
