Hyypia pledges 100% effort

Sami Hyypia has admitted Liverpool may have left it too late in their bid for Champions League glory - but says they will give it their best shot.

The Reds have yet to win a game in the second phase, but victory over AS Roma on Tuesday could be enough. They will have to beat the group leaders by two clear goals if Barcelona tie with draw specialists Galatasaray in Istanbul.

And inspirational captain Hyypia - frustrated by another two points dropped in Barcelona on Wednesday - feels they may have left too much to chance.

The Finn (left) said: "We needed to win in Barcelona, really, but we know we still have a small chance of going through. It's going to be hard against Roma because we'll have to take some risks and go for that 2-0 win."

Liverpool's "negative" style has earned them no end of criticism from Barcelona, whose defender Frank De Boer said he would "hate" to play for the Merseyside team.

Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert also had a pot-shot, saying they will never conquer Europe again unless they change their tactics.

But Kluivert - who has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool - changed his mind after the 0-0 draw on Wednesday. Although Liverpool again failed to score, meaning they have hit just nine goals in 11 Champions League matches, Kluivert was impressed.

He said: "Liverpool face a difficult game but if any team was to win, I'd fancy them, especially if Michael Owen is fit again."
