Igor eager to succeed

The Croatian international endured a miserable first two years at Anfield and looked set to leave the club for pastures new before Gerard Houllier's words of wisdom convinced Biscan that his future remained on Merseyside.

Having finally won the approval of the Liverpool fans with a series of accomplished displays alongside Sami Hyypia in the heart of the Reds defence, the 26-year-old is sure he made the right decision in vowing to fight for his place in the Premiership.

Biscan said: "It's true I had talks with Panathinaikos during the summer. But I had a chat with the manager and he told me not to go, so that was it. I stayed.

"I know it wasn't a good time for me in the first two years here. The fans didn't see the best I could offer.

"Now, I hope I'm showing them I'm a good player and I deserve to be in a team as good as Liverpool's. I'm a lot happier now because I'm playing regularly. Things are better for me this season than they have been. My confidence is much higher than before.

"Now it's up to me to settle at the level I'm at and to try and stay in the team."

The true test of Biscan's importance to Gerard Houllier's plans will, of course, have to be faced soon as Stephane Henchoz closes in on full fitness. Biscan knows how tough it will be to permanently replace the famed Hyypia/Henchoz partnership, but he insists that he is ready to compete for a starting place on a regular basis.

Biscan added: "I don't know if I can stay in the side ahead of Stephane Henchoz. Steff is a great defender who has formed a great partnership with Sami Hyypia over many years.

"For me, personally, all I can do is stay fit and do well whenever I get the chance to play. We have a tough place to go in Charlton on Sunday. We have to be ready for that and hopefully I'll be involved again."
