Liverpool's Champions League opponents opened up a ten point gap at the top of Serie A when they beat second from bottom Empoli 1-0 at the San Siro thanks to a dubious penalty. Midfielder Ighli Vannucchi was adjudged to have handled in the box but television replays showed the ball hit him in the face.
