Craig Bellamy captained Wales for the first time but saw his side go down 5-1 at home to Slovakia. Also in Group D, Steve Finnan was part of the Republic of Ireland side that were stuffed 5-2 by a poor Cyprus team.

There was disappointment for the Reds' Spanish contingent as Spain's poor start in Group F continued. Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso were unused subsitutes in their 2-0 defeat to Sweden. Luis Garcia came on as a subsitute for the last half hour.

John Arne Riise was part of the Norway side that were beaten 1-0 in Greece.

Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard played the full 90 minutes as England were held to a feeble 0-0 at home to Macedonia. Jamie Carragher was an unused subsitute.

Sami Hyypia played for Finland in their disappointing 0-0 draw with Armenia while Daniel Agger was part of the Denmark team held 0-0 at home by Northern Ireland.

Poland beat Kazakhstan 1-0 but Jerzy Dudek failed to make the sixteen.
