Irish salvage pride

The Irish defence came in for a lot of criticism after Saturday's 5-2 drubbing by Cyprus but Steve Finnan and his fellow defenders regained a lot of pride with last night's result against the Czechs.

Ireland manager Steve Staunton, whose job was under threat before yesterday's game, was happy with his side's performance and believed they were worth the win.

"We are disappointed not to have three points tonight," said the former Liverpool defender.

"I think our chances and all-round display deserved the win. I have to say the lads were magnificent and the crowd really got behind us.

"It has been a long hard week and I am not giving up in the group yet."
