It's Owen-ly a matter of time

Despite supplying Rooney with assists for two of his four goals in the tournament and showing signs of finding his best form in the 4-2 thriler against Croatia, Owen does not feel wholly satisfied with his contribution to the England cause.

Owen said: "Wayne's the one scoring goals at the moment, but I know it's only a matter of time before I'm getting the goals. He's creating them for me, and there will be other times when we're both knocking them in, which will be even better.

"As long as one of us is scoring and the other is contributing, we'll be happy. I seem to be creating rather than scoring at the moment.

"I prefer to score goals. It bothers me when I'm not. Half of me is ecstatic that we're through but five per cent of me is a bit disappointed because I haven't scored.

"I enjoy the responsibility of scoring goals and I haven't done that yet. I had a decent chance last night but put it over the bar. I'd have loved to get on the scoresheet.

"But making them for others is a part of the game I've worked a lot on and the next best thing to scoring is creating. I put in a cross for Wayne in the last game and helped with a couple of the goals last night, so I'm not unhappy with how I'm playing.

"I feel I am getting sharper with every game. I started off a bit slowly against France, although I didn't feel I was playing badly. There was a bit of an improvement against Switzerland and then a bit more of an improvement this time.

"The next step for me is to score a goal. I haven't been missing chances. It's just a matter of time before I'm scoring again and I hope it's against Portugal. The bigger the game the more I relish it."
