The Finnish international scored from the penalty spot and put in a fine display against the Italians and certainly helped his chances of playing more often.

"The thing that proves how good a team is, is how they are able to cope in the really big games," said Litmanen.

"The best players and teams look forward to playing the games that matter most, the games that decide your destiny.

"The Roma game was crucial. We had to get the right result and there was a lot of pressure on us. It was the kind of occasion I like best and the whole team responded to the challenge.

"It was the kind of night that Liverpool is remembered for and I enjoyed being part of it.

"Liverpool have proved over the last year we are a good cup team, able to handle the pressure of one off matches. In the group we haven't always played well but we have been effective all the way through.

"It is too soon to be talking about winning the Champions League but we are in with as good a chance as anyone now."
