Jari set for Ajax exit

The 33-year-old Finnish star lifted the Champions League and was named European Player of the Year in his first spell with the Amsterdam side, but he has struggled to find fitness since returning from Liverpool two years ago.

Liverpool supporters also failed to see Litmanen's mercurial talents often enough during the forward's spell on Merseyside and Ajax's decision to end their association with the veteran could mark the end for one of the greatest players in recent history.

Ajax Director Arie van Eijden says: "We regret it very much that we have to say goodbye to Jari, but he has played much less than everybody had hoped in the last two years, because of physical problems.

"That was also reason not to renew his contract. It is sad for the club and also for Jari that he could not play more games. We hope that he can play some matches this season so that he can end his career as player of Ajax in a worthy fashion."
