The Reds triumphed in Europe's elite club competition last term, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Madrid final, and ended up just one point behind Guardiola's Manchester City in the battle for domestic glory.

He beat both Guardiola and Tottenham boss Pochettino to the award on Monday night.

He added: "I have to say thank you to my outstanding club, Liverpool FC. Whoever doesn't love it has no heart.

"To the owners, they gave me an incredible team, and I have to thank my team, because as a coach you can only be as good as your team.

Liverpool squeaked out of the Champions League group stage, finishing second behind Paris Saint-Germain before easing past Bayern Munich and Porto in the round of 16 and quarter finals respectively.

A 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou to Barcelona seemed to have dashed any hopes of reaching the final, but a remarkable 4-0 victory at Anfield saw them through to Madrid's showpiece.

The Reds eased past a jaded Tottenham side thanks to a second minute Mohamed Salah penalty and Divock Origi's 87th minute finish.

Liverpool have got their 2019/20 Premier League season off to a brilliant start, winning all six games, most recently triumphing at Chelsea 2-1 thanks to strikes from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino.
