Liverpool's new £20m striker did not score in the four pre-season friendlies he played in but is confident he will soon be amongst the goals when the competitve stuff begins.

"I'm not bothered about not scoring - that's something which has never concerned me and it won't start doing so now," he said.

"Of course it would have been nice to get my first goal in a red shirt because that's something I'm looking forward to, but pre-season is about getting fit and making sure you're ready for the proper stuff, so I'm not worried.

"When it comes down to it, goals scored in pre-season don't really count. They don't go on your career record and they don't get you any points.

"The proper games are what really count and that's what tonight's game is all about.

"The real business is about to start and hopefully I'll prove that I'm ready because, like all the lads, I've been working really hard.

"I'm sure the goals will come and if it's not tonight then hopefully it will be in the next game, but I won't be worrying about it. The important thing is that the team does well.

"We've got a tough game on our hands tonight because Standard Liege are the champions of Belgium and I'm sure they'll be up for this one."
