Kewell believes he has under-performed

Great things were expected of Harry Kewell when he signed for Liverpool last summer but despite a good goal scoring record Kewell says he has under-performed.

After making an impressive start to his Liverpool career Kewell took a knock and has looked off the pace since returning from injury but the Reds' Ozzie star is determined to come through this testing time.

"I'm the first person to hold up my hands and say I'm not playing well. I wasn't happy with my form a few months ago and I'm still not happy now," says Kewell.

"You can look for excuses. It's all 'la-di-da' stuff as far as I'm concerned and other people can say it if they want. I'm not one for that. I'm not someone who's going to hide behind things such as injuries or it being my first season.

"All the injury means is it took me a bit of time to get my fitness, that's all. It's not an issue now.

"The manager bought me to create goals and score and I've got to start repaying him. I owe it to him to do that because I've not done it.

"I think over the season there will be some things I've done he'll be happy with, but I've not done enough. He bought me for a reason and as far as I'm concerned I haven't lived up to it.

"I know the supporters aren't happy at the moment. They can see what's happening, but they know what I'm capable of and I just want to give them the chance to see it.

"I've got to just keep plugging away. I keep staying behind to do that bit extra in training so I can improve my game. When you're in this situation, the only answer is to go back to scratch and work hard.

"As a player, you're always likely to get these spells. Sometimes you're flying and at other times you're down. In a way, when you're in a spell like this you've got to think of it as the most interesting time because nothing comes easy and you have to work your way out of it.

"I don't know what it will take. I'd like to think a good pass or a great shot will kick-start me, but I'm not so sure it's that easy because I've made a few decent passes and had a few great shots but it still hasn't made my all-round game what I want it to be.

"Everyone likes to think they have an answer, but it comes from within yourself. Others can only guide you, they can't go out and do it for you."
