Kirkland fighting fit

The 22-year-old former Coventry City star has suffered several frustrating spells on the sidelines since assuming control of the number one jersey at Anfield over a year ago.

The young shot-stopper is desperate to mantain his fitness now that he is back in the Reds side and in contention for a place in Sven Goran Eriksson's England squad for Euro 2004.

Kirkland said: "I've heard a lot of people saying 'he's always injured' or 'he's jinxed'. It hurts when you hear that kind of thing.

"You can understand it when people say it because I've been injured so much, but it's not something I like to hear. The fact is all the knocks I've had couldn't have been avoided.

"There was nothing I could do about the serious knee injury against Crystal Palace last year and then the broken finger against Bolton was again just something which could have happened to anyone. It wasn't my fault.

"It's not as if I'm going out and doing things which would harm my body or make me vulnerable to getting injured. I'm doing the right things and looking after myself in a professional way."

After earning a return to the England squad to face Portugal last week, Kirkland had to be at his most apologetic to avoid further injury from his fiance.

"That was a big surprise and got me into a bit of trouble, actually. It was my fiance's birthday last Tuesday and I was supposed to be getting her a nice present," added Kirkland.

"Instead I was in London preparing to go to Portugal so all our plans went out of the window. I suppose you could say my international career has interfered with my relationship! But I apologised and I think I'm forgiven now."
