The 22-year-old former Coventry City shot-stopper has had to be content with a place on the Liverpool bench and a fleeting number of reserve team appearances since his return to fitness from a groin injury - a situation which Kirkland feels will hinder his international prospects.

Kirkland said: "You would have to ask Sven Goran Eriksson whether I need to be playing first team football before I play for England.

"But I think playing helps your case a lot. I was surprised to be in the England squad earlier this season - but hopefully it will come round again."
