The England Under 21 keeper replaced the inconsistent Jerzy Dudek in December, but a knee injury picked up in Liverpool's FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace in January ruled him out of the rest of the season.
"I hope I can play a major part in this season's task of finishing higher and winning a Champions League spot," he said. "It was a tough season for sure.
"I think the Premier League has more to offer than just Manchester United and Arsenal challenging for honours and the top six sides are all capable of beating each other."
"But for our dip in form we could have finished third or even higher last season but the table doesn't lie and that regard there was certainly some cause for concern."
"The lads know about it and felt bad about the league form. We didn't record a win in 11 games and that cost us dearly but at the same time we feel we can change it this season,"
