Kirkland nearly quit

Kirkland was unable to hold down a regular place in the Liverpool first team because every time he had a run of games he'd end up picking up an injury and losing his place again to Jerzy Dudek.

Kirkland has now joined Wigan on a six month loan with the option to make the move permanent should he prove his fitness. The goalkeeper is hoping for a bit more luck this time.

"At times I wanted to pack it in, I'm not scared to admit that. It's been very hard, but my mum and dad, and my wife, have all helped me," said the former England under 21's international.

"I love football and I love training so it has been very frustrating. I was very proud to move to Liverpool and play games for them.

"It didn't work out and I've basically got to start my career again. I'm very grateful for Wigan for giving me a chance.

"They've taken a gamble with all the injuries, but I'm very confident if I can stay injury free, hopefully I can get back to the form I showed before.

"It's a loan until Christmas for them to have a look at me and hopefully I'll be signing a proper contract on January 1."
