Kirkland ready to fight for his place

Kirkland was restored to the first eleven against Chelsea and played well, despite the Reds' eventual defeat to a Joe Cole goal. Now he is first choice again Kirkland has promised he will do all he can to stay that way.

Kirkland said: ""I am confident I can show my best form at Liverpool and get into the team. If I wasn't confident I wouldn't be staying here but I'm confident I can do well here.

"I've missed a lot of football and only played something like 30 games for Liverpool in three years. That's not good enough. But I can honestly say I couldn't have done anymore. I've had freak injuries which could have happened to anyone, but I'm not going to change the way I play. If there's a challenge to be won then I'll still be going in to try and win it. It wouldn't be me to do anything else."
