When not out of action due to a number of injuries Kirkland had seemed to win the nod over Jerzy Dudek during the Houllier era, but he knows he must be fully-fit and ready to impress for new manager Rafael Benitez.

Kirkland, speaking to the club's official website, said: This is a big season for me, possibly the biggest of my career so far.

"My Liverpool career hasn't really got going yet because of all the injuries but this season I'm determined to make an impact. I'm sick of being injured and I'm sick of talking about injuries.

"It's a big season for me but it's also a big one for the team. We have to get closer to the top teams than we were last season and start making progress."
