Kirkland is set to start against Southampton tomorrow, with Gerard Houllier convinced that the keeper has all it takes to become a success at Anfield.
He said: "He has had a few injury problems but we will be sorting that out. He is still building up his game and I want to pay tribute to Joe Corrigan, who is doing a very good job with him.
"With his coaching he will continue to learn and progress into a very good goalkeeper. He has had to be patient, but I know all his qualities."
Meanwhile Kirkland has spoken of his excitement at his first appearance for the Reds this season, believing it to be his 'big chance'.
"It's a big chance for me and one I am looking forward to. I've played a few reserve games this season and I feel sharp. Hopefully I can turn in a good performance on Wednesday."
