Kirkland's chances at Anfield have been limited due to the excellent form of Jerzy Dudek, but nevertheless the Liverpool boss feels that he keeper has the ability to play at the highest level.

He said: "Chris was very unlucky in the recent international double header because he was injured for the first game and then had to come off in the second match.

"He is back to full fitness now and I think at some stage he could be the answer to the goalkeeping situation with England.

"He is a great lad. He wants to improve and progress all the time. It might take him a little while to get there, but I think he will be good enough to play for England."
