Kirkland replaced Jerzy Dudek for Liverpool's game at Chelsea on Sunday and, although he has missed the chance of a call-up for England's forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, he is hopeful of earning his first cap soon.

"In my mind, it's always different with goalkeepers as you need to give them confidence," said Benitez.

"If you change, then you need to be confident in your new goalkeeper. Normally, you would let a goalkeeper play four or five games at least."

"We were losing away and not playing well so I changed five players. I was happy with them as all of them tried to fight, run and do the things we were talking about."
