Kirkland has suffered fom a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will definitely miss the rest of the season. The former Coventry keeper is fully aware that the terrible injury has came at a time when he was finally establishing himself as the number one goalkeeper at Anfield.

He said: "It's incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I felt that I was just beginning to establish myself at Liverpool and this has come at a very bad time for me.

"I don't know how long I will be out. The doctors are saying I will have to wait and see. It could be next season, I don't know, but it is obviously very painful for me.

"All I can do is stay as positive as possible. It is bad, but it is not the end of the world. I know I will be back and I aim to do that as soon as possible.

"Jerzy Dudek is a fantastic goalkeeper and everyone knows he will come back in and do a great job.
