Kirkland's secret injury

The England Under 21 keeper, currently first choice at Anfield, realises that the problem is a long-term one.

"I've been working with a lady in Loughborough who helps me out," he said. "She is a back specialist and has been tremendous in keeping me fit and keeping the back problems at bay.

"It's not a short-term thing and it's something I'm going to have to do probably for the rest of my career, but in terms of the future and what I may be able to achieve in the game it's a small sacrifice to make.

"The boss has been tremendous about it. Sometimes he will give me the day off to drive to Loughborough and get treatment and other times she comes up to see me.

"The whole thing is about building the back up, building the muscles and making sure they're strong. It is a muscle imbalance that causes the trouble and I have to be very careful. It's all about managing the situation in the right way and at the moment everything is fine."
