Kuyt impressed after coming on for a 40 minute run out in the second half against West Ham on Saturday. The Dutch striker came close to scoring on a few occasions and set up Craig Bellamy for a goal that was narrowly ruled out for offside.

Kuyt's display made him an immediate Kop favourite. The Anfield crowd applauded his performance and Kuyt was quick to return the compliment.

"It was a fantastic welcome. It was wonderful to play at Anfield, they are a wonderful crowd but the most important thing was that we won. It was a pity I didn't score, but I'm sure it will come. And I think I can do more than just score and I try and work hard for the team and try some assists," said Rafael Benitez's £9m signing.

"I haven't set myself any targets in terms of scoring goals. For me, that's not the most necessary thing, the most important for us is to win trophies."
