Liverpool have signed the Dutch defender from Villarreal in a straight swap deal, with Josemi moving in the opposite direction. The 25 year old full-back, who can also play in midfield, has spoken of his delight in joining the Champions of Europe.

"Ever since I was young it was a dream of mine to one day play football as a professional in England," admitted Kromkamp.

"To actually achieve that goal and join the Champions League holders is unbelievable. Everything happened so quicky over Christmas and within days of finding out I was wanted by Rafael Benitez, I was on my way to Liverpool and signing for the club.

"I've only been here for a few days but already I realise just how big a club I've joined. I knew lots about Liverpool before I arrived because everyone in Holland follows the Premiership and everyone in the world knows of Liverpool Football Club but to see the facilities here at Melwood really brings it home to you about how serious this club is.

"The club is full of household names and to be on the same training pitch as a player like Steven Gerrard can only be a good thing for me. I know how much competition there is for places at Liverpool but I accept that and it is up to me to work hard and impress upon the manager than I deserve to be given a chance in the first-team. You don't get anything for nothing in football and I know that how well I do at Liverpool is down to me and the hard work I put in. I look at breaking into the first-team as a challenge and I really want to take it."
