Kuyt admitted weeks ago he was ready to sign a new contract, and today he formally put pen to paper on his new deal. Now he has his eyes on winning trophies with the Reds.

"It's a great feeling to sign my second extension for the club. It feels like a privilege to help the club back to where they belong," he said.

"I've had a great time so far. Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and it's special to be here. We've come close to winning trophies a few times but unfortunately it didn't happen.

"It's great to play five years for a club like Liverpool but you want to win trophies and that's what I am aiming for. That's what I believe in and what I will be fighting for.

"Everyone knows the last two seasons have not gone as good as we would have wanted, but I don't like to look at the past. The future looks bright.

"Since the arrival of the owners a lot of things have happened in a positive way and I think everyone can see we have been playing better. We can see the quality of the players who arrived in January and also it's right to say that the youth players have done well. Martin Kelly has had a good season, although he is unfortunately injured at the moment, and John Flanagan played well against Manchester City.

"The future is bright here, definitely."
