Lawrenson backs small Owen to do Brazil

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes Michael Owen will be able to shine against Brazil on Friday.

The BBC football pundit believes Owen's pace could be the key to securing England an important victory.

"Somebody small and quick like Michael Owen will love the opportunity to play against the Brazilian defence," said Lawro.

"His pace, alertness, allied to passes across the Brazilian defenders, will give him all sorts of openings to exploit.

"The way their fullbacks Cafu and Roberto Carlos storm forward at every opportunity will also give England plenty of space and opportunities on the counter attack.

"Owen's pace can really hurt Brazil and he will remember three key things about the last time he faced Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio in the Champions League quarter-final last season.

First, Owen will remember painfully that Liverpool were beaten, that he missed three one-on-one chances and, most significantly, that he had the beating of Lucio to create those openings himself."
