Lawrenson: No hesitation in signing for Reds

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has been recalling how he signed for the club back in the 1980's.

While writing in today's Mirror about Rio Ferdinand's current tug-of-war between Leeds United and Manchester United, Lawrenson explains why he joined a massive club in Liverpool despite people trying to put him off.

"Back in the 80s when I left Brighton, I had the choice between three clubs - Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. And, in truth, there was not even a decision to make," said the BBC Football pundit.

"United manager Ron Atkinson made a very good offer and I could have earned more at Old Trafford than Anfield, while I met Arsenal manager Terry Neill the night before I joined Liverpool.

"Terry was a great salesman - he gave me the whole Arsenal tradition, marble halls and a potential partnership with David O'Leary and it was very tempting.

"But when Liverpool manager Bob Paisley came in at the very last minute - which was just typical Liverpool - it took me all of about five minutes to make up my mind.

"There were people telling me that I would have to bide my time and spend 18 months in the reserves in the usual Anfield style of introducing players into the club.

"But in eight years there, I only played four reserve games. And, anyway, you must always have faith in your own ability to force your way into the first team."
