Lawrenson: Reds on return to glory days

Liverpool recaptured glorious European memories with their stunning Champions League success over Roma.

It echoed those heady days of 1984 when Liverpool enjoyed their finest hour with the European Cup final victory over Roma in the Italian team's own backyard. But that is not just because of the euphoria of Tuesday night or the fact it was Roma who were so convincingly beaten in front of the returning Kop hero Gerard Houllier.

It was because there is genuine belief that on the evidence of such a superb display those glory, glory nights are returning to the club which once dominated European football.

It was an honour, privilege and a life-changing experience to be involved in some of those incredible European occasions during the 1980s.

There is nowhere better than Anfield for those nights with the electric atmosphere, the sea of red and some of the world's best opposition playing in front of the Kop.

They were great days. Most fans would probably say the greatest-ever night was against St Etienne at Anfield, but having played in two European Cup finals, there were plenty others besides.

For me personally, some will live long in the memory - Panathinaikos, Dynamo Bucharest and even Benfica, although they held us to a draw.

We thumped four past the Greeks, at home, beat Dynamo Bucharest - special because that got us to the final against Roma - drew with Benfica and then went and beat them in Lisbon.

But that semi-final victory over Bucharest was particularly precious as we were so close to the final and knew that winning the trophy in Rome was just 90 minutes away. That, as much as anything, reminds me of this current Liverpool team in that we reached the 1984 final by virtually winning through the rounds and eventually the trophy itself away from home.

They were fabulous evenings at Anfield because they were win-or-bust ties, the excitement of watching different opponents and the world's best players, as well as knowing they had a genuine chance of lifting the trophy.

From here on in, all of that is true for Liverpool's current European campaign and having Houllier on the touchline on Tuesday only went to charge the electric atmosphere still further.

The Liverpool fans are always passionate and vociferous and European ties only increase the excitement and anticipation. There is also something extra special about a night-match for any player.

Liverpool now go into the hat with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona and they have a genuine chance of going all the way.

The key to it - and this is a throwback to 1984 and all that - is their defensive strength. No one will hold any fears for them.

Furthermore, the return of Houllier could not be better timed as it gave the players a huge lift on Tuesday and can have the same effect during the Premiership run-in. Assistant manager Phil Thompson has done a terrific job and Houllier can return to oversee the running of the club while Thommo is hands-on.

It was wonderful to see Houllier back in the dugout.

But while every football fan is happy that he has returned, I was still thinking: "I just hope he is properly fit and looking after himself."

But Liverpool are in strong shape and much of that is to do with the defensive axis of Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz. They are the best pair in the Premiership and you would struggle to find better in Europe.

They can travel away from home and be strong defensively while also be tough at home and avoid conceding the all-important goal at Anfield.

Liverpool should be particularly confident, especially now they are in the knockout rounds, which is when the competition really hots-up.

Any team in the world know that if Liverpool score then it is incredibly hard to get back on level terms, so don't dismiss their chances of plenty more glory, glory nights at Anfield.
