Lawrenson rules Liverpool out of title challenge

Despite the narrow gap at the top, Lawro believes Liverpool will have to settle for the Champions League.

"The Manchester United manager's reigning champions are still the best team in the country, but the title race will go right to the wire this season," said Lawro.

"United will snatch the championship by the narrowest of margins and it is only Arsenal's indiscipline that will, in the end, count so dearly against Arsene Wenger's challengers.

"Arsenal will push United all of the way and there may only be two points between them, with Liverpool and Newcastle grabbing the other Champions League places.

"But it is United's experience, class and consistency that will lead them to the Premiership title and provide a glorious and fitting end if Fergie does step down at Old Trafford in May."
