Lee praised

McAteer was a Liverpool player during Lee's first spell as a Reds coach and says Rafael Benitez has appointed the perfect man to be his assistant.

"Sammy Lee is one of the best coaches in Europe - by a mile," said the former wingback.

"Getting him back at the club was a really shrewd move by Rafa Benitez and I think he has played a massive part in the good run of results we've seen so far this season.

"I was made up to see him go back to the club because Liverpool have always had a link to the boot room. It was similar when Phil Thompson went back with Gerard Houllier - that was also good to see as well.

"Sammy's coaching sessions are fantastic and he's such a positive person, he won't let anything get the players down. He is the most infectious person you will ever meet.

"A football club is made up of different characters, we're not machines and Sammy works out quickly who is down, who might need an arm around their shoulder and who might need a kick up the backside.

"Having someone who knows about the history and legacy of the club is great because there are some players who can join Liverpool and be a little bit overwhelmed and don't quite know what it's all about.

"But Sammy can really pick a player up when he is down. He'll be great to have around the dressing room - his man-management is absolutely brilliant."
