Celtic took the lead after eight minutes through Darren Jackson but Liverpool were level four minutes later when Masters regular and goalscorer extrodinare John Durnin equalised. Durnin met a Ray Houghton cross to bury in the Reds' leveller.

Jackson scored again for Celtic immediately afterwards and it stayed 2-1 until the hour mark when Steve McManaman scored an excellent equaliser after a pass from Mark Lawrenson.

King Kenny Dalglish, who managed the Red side on the night, entered the fray as a late subsitute to a magnificent reception from both sets of supporters.
