The Liverpool playmaker was an integral part of the Lens side that were crowned league champions in 1998 and top-scored in the French league before sealing a £4.5m to Anfield.

The 30-year-old schemer was heralded as the replacement for Kop idol Steve McManaman upon his arrival on Merseyside and he has often struggled to shoulder such a troublesome burden during an inconsistent time at the club.

Having handed the treasured number seven shirt to Harry Kewell, however, Smicer showed telling glimpses of his mercurial talent in the last season and would welcome a chance to prove his worth to in-coming manager Rafael Benitez next season.
