Liverpool qualified for the UEFA Cup by virtue of finishing third place in their Champions League group, and now the former striker and current BBC pundit believes that the Reds can overcome the 'blip' of losing out on Champions League football and do well in Europe's second competition.

He told Soccernet: "Liverpool's progress has been terrific under Houllier. It's a blip and a disappointment for them to go out of the Champions League early but they're in with a good chance of a trophy in the UEFA Cup, which is a bit more realistic."

But Lineker also accused Gerard Houllier of being 'over concerned' with the Champions League, and beleieves they must do their upmost to do well in the League.

"Sometimes managers get overly concerned with the Champions League to the detriment of their domestic responsibilities. The first thing Liverpool should do, especially this year when they seem to have a genuine chance, is concentrate on the league."
