Litmanen, now back at Dutch giants Ajax, feels he is the missing ingredient in a side currently struggling to qualify for the lucrative Champions League.

Litmanen, speaking in The News of the World, said: "What they need is a playmaker like me. I can't understand why I had to leave. It causes me a lot of pain to watch them play these days."

"The manager and coaches are the same, the one thing that is missing is chemistry"

"I would love to help take them back to the top. I had pictures of Liverpool on my walls at home as a little boy. It is still my favourite club."
