Rafa Benitez's side looked on control of the game until referee Rob Styles wrongly awarded the visitors a penalty which Frank Lampard converted.
Styles then proceeded to lose control of the game, appearing to award a second yellow card to Michael Essien without realising he'd previously booked the player.
