Liverpool defender facing career threatening period

Last updated : 06 July 2002 By The Editor

Liverpool defender Vegard Heggem has admitted that time is running out for him to save his footballing career.

The former Norwegian international star has suffered a series of groin problems for what now seems like an eternity and it's been set-back after set-back for the player that every 'old-skool' internet Red has a soft spot for.

Newcomers to the internet probably aren't aware that they have Heggem to thank for bringing us alternative news from Anfield and Melwood via Liverpool player's websites. Vedgy was one of the first footballers in England to launch a personal website and he soon had the likes of Mad Erik, Sander Westerveld, Robbie Fowler etc etc all signed-up - who can forget Erik Meijer's cooking recipes! These days players are interviewed and their words rest in neat templates generating revenue for the suits above and of course the player's themselves.

Speaking on his website, Vedgy says: "I am under no illusions. If I am not fit by the end of the coming season then I won't get a contract anywhere, which would mean my football career would be over.

"I am only 26, which is still young, even for a footballer, and I really enjoy playing football. There is nothing I enjoy more."

Because Vedgy isn't your typical stuck-up, full of himself professional footballer, we've always had a lot of time for him and we're hoping that he can recover fully from his problems and get back on the football pitch where he belongs, be that at Anfield or anywhere else.

Good luck V.
